À l’occasion du centenaire des 24 Heures du Mans, la toute première Bentley (et la toute première participation internationale) à participer à l’emblématique course française est vendue pour plus de 3 millions de livres sterling

En 1923, cette Bentley 3 litres a été pilotée en privé au Mans par le vétéran canadien de la Première Guerre mondiale John Duff et le pilote d’essai Bentley Frank Clement pour terminer 4e au général, malgré une fuite de réservoir de carburant causée par des pierres provenant de la piste non pavée.

Vendu à un passionné britannique par Kidston SA, une société de courtage dirigée par Simon Kidston, neveu de ‘Bentley Boy’ Glen Kidston, qui a copiloté la dernière Bentley à gagner au Mans avant que la société Bentley d’origine ne soit mise en liquidation

Après sa carrière en course, la première Le Mans Bentley est tombée dans l’oubli et a été carrossée dans les années 1940 en « frein de chasse » par l’entrepreneur de pompes funèbres local pour transporter les chiens Saint-Bernard de sa propriétaire.

La voiture a été découverte dans une grange du village du Leicestershire dans les années 1980, qui appartenait toujours à la dame âgée de 97 ans, et a depuis été restaurée dans sa gloire d’origine.

Il y a un siècle, une Bentley 3 litres devenait la première voiture britannique et la première Bentley à participer à l’épuisante course des 24 Heures du Mans lors de sa première année. Aujourd’hui, alors que cette course emblématique – un test de 24 heures à plein régime entre l’homme et la machine – célèbre son centenaire, cette toute première Bentley a été vendue à un passionné britannique pour plus de 3 millions de livres sterling.

Courtée par Kidston SA, société fondée par Simon Kidston – le neveu de Glen Kidston, vainqueur des 24 Heures du Mans 1930 au volant d’une Bentley – cette voiture représente le début de la légende Bentley et l’établissement de la tradition de ‘Les garçons Bentley’. Kidston, Clement, Duff et d’autres comme Sir Tim Birkin, le Dr Dudley Benjafield ou l’ancien président de Bentley, Woolf Barnato, deviendraient connus sous le nom de The Bentley Boys pour leur style de vie de course intense. Comme l’a dit le fondateur de la société, W.O Bentley, à propos des bouffonneries de ce groupe : « Le public aimait les imaginer vivre dans les appartements de Mayfair. Boire du champagne dans les boîtes de nuit, jouer aux chevaux et à la Bourse, et battre furieusement sur les pistes de course le week-end. De plusieurs d’entre eux, ce n’était pas une image si inexacte.

Cette voiture, le châssis 141, a été engagée et conduite par le vétéran canadien de la Première Guerre mondiale, l’aventurier et le concessionnaire Bentley John Duff au double record de 12 heures à Brooklands (la course de 24 heures a été interdite pour que les habitants puissent dormir), couvrant 2 082 milles à 86,79 mph et réglage 38 records internationaux. Il a ensuite demandé à W.O Bentley de préparer sa voiture fiable pour une nouvelle course de 24 heures qui se tiendra à un endroit en France appelé Le Mans. Bien que Bentley ait pensé que c’était fou, il a accepté et a prêté le pilote d’essai d’usine Frank Clement pour copiloter. Bentley et les Bentley Boys reviendront au Mans pour la course de 24 heures de l’année suivante. Et cette fois, ils gagneraient. De 1927 à 1930, Bentley a remporté les 24 Heures du Mans quatre fois de suite, marquant l’une des courses les plus dominantes de l’histoire de la course. Et tout cela est dû aux réalisations pionnières du châssis 141 pour convaincre le fondateur de l’entreprise, W.O. Bentley, que ses voitures étaient capables non seulement de terminer une course de 24 heures, mais aussi de la gagner.

W.O lui-même a déclaré qu’il possédait beaucoup à John Duff et au châssis 141. Après les courses des 24 Heures du Mans en 1923 et 1924, Bentley a vendu 700 véhicules en deux ans – tout cela d’un jeune constructeur qui n’avait livré que sa première voiture en 1921. Il n’est pas exagéré de dire que le succès de la marque Bentley dans son ensemble peut être attribué à ces réalisations.

Mais, avec le temps, Chassis 141 a vécu une vie plus banale. Il a ensuite été utilisé comme véhicule de remorquage, puis sa carrosserie arrière a été transformée en frein de tir par l’entrepreneur de pompes funèbres local. À la fin des années 40, il a été utilisé par sa propriétaire pour transporter ses chiens Saint-Bernard à des expositions.
